서울시립미술관에 펼쳐진 뉴미디어 아트

서울시립미술관이 8월 1일부터 9월 20일까지 37일간 ‘라이트월’ 展을 개최해 빛나는 밤풍경을 연출한다. 여름철 미술관 관람객 및 시민들이 많이 방문하는 시간대에 맞춰 예술적 영상 작품을 순환하여 투영하는 방식으로 진행되는 이번 라이트월 展은 10분 내외의 영상 작품 두 편이 밤 8시부터 10시까지 미술관 외벽에 반복적으로 상영된다.

라이트월은 작가의 작품을 미디어 테크놀로지를 통해 미술관 벽면에 구현한 것으로 영상 작품 제작은 미디어 아트 그룹인 뮌(김민선, 최문선)이 담당했으며 미술관 건물에 이미지가 매핑될 수 있도록 한 기술적 구현은 아키텍처 프로젝션 팀(Architecture Projection Team)인 퍼포머티브(PERFORMATIVE)가 담당했다.

‘vvvv’ 툴 활용해 영상 작품을 파사드에 투사

이번 <라이트월>전에서는 건물에 영상을 바로 재생하는 방식이 아니라 건물 구조와 동일한 가상공간을 재구축하고 이 공간에서 영상을 실시간으로 렌더링하여 그 결과 화면을 실제 벽면에 프로젝션하는 방식인 아키텍쳐 프로젝션(Architecture Projection)이 적용됐다.

솔루션은 실시간 영상 생성 플랫폼인 ‘vvvv’를 기반으로 제작됐다. 퍼포머티브 팀은 서울시립미술관 도면을 바탕으로 가상의 3차원 모형을 재구성하고, 여기에 영상 매핑(Video Mapping)기법을 적용함으로써 다양한 질감과 색을 입히는 작업을 하였다.

서울시립미술관의 3차원 모델에 다양한 컴퓨터 그래픽스 알고리즘을 적용하여 가상의 조명 효과와 물리 효과 등을 연출하였다. 이렇게 실시간으로 컴퓨터에 의하여 생성된 영상을 실제 미술관의 벽면에 정확하게 맞추어 투영함으로써 영상 작품과 작품이 투사되는 파사드의 일체감을 부여했다. 영상으로 표현하려는 모델을 수십 만개의 점으로 제어하기 때문에 마치 파사드에 직접 칠하는 것과 같은 사실감을 구현할 수 있다.

퍼포머티브는 프로그래밍 언어인 vvvv에 대해 “Max/MSP/Jitter에 견주어 손색이 없는 비주얼 프로그래밍 툴로서 뉴미디어아트 작가를 중심으로 그 활용도가 증가하고 있는 추세”라고 소개했다.

이미지를 표출하는 인터페이스로는 3대의 프로젝터가 사용됐으며 한 대의 컴퓨터로 솔루션을 제어한다. 컴퓨터와 프로젝터를 늘리면 표출되는 이미지 크기는 무한대로 확장이 가능하고 인터랙티브 구현도 가능하다는 것이 퍼포머티브 팀의 설명. 가령 관객이 캔버스에 그림을 그리는 행위(모션)를 인식해 이를 데이터화해서 파사드에 프로젝트로 투사하는 인터랙티브 미디어가 가능하다.

 

INTERVIEW : “인문학과 공학 컨버전스로 미디어아트 환경 제공”

퍼포머티브 팀이 하는 일은?
아키텍처 프로젝션(Architecture Projection) 팀인 퍼포머티브(PERFORMATIVE)는 예술 분야의 전시 시스템이나 디지털 아카이빙과 같은 기술적인 분야에서부터 디지털 기술에 기반하고 있는 예술 작품의 제작 및 미디어 기반의 공연 등 새롭게 등장하고 있는 기술 기반 예술 형식의 전반에 걸쳐 다양한 창작에 대한 지원 활동을 하는 프로젝트 팀이다.

팀 구성원을 소개해 달라.
팀을 구성한 지는 1년이 지났는데 인문분야와 공학분야 석•박사들로 이루어져 있다. 구성원에서 알 수 있듯이 퍼포머티브는 공학과 예술의 만남을 모토로 하여 뉴미디어 테크놀로지를 기반으로 한 창작 활동과 창작 활동 지원에 주력하는 팀이다.

인문학과 공학기술의 만남은 어떤 의미를 가지나.
우선 뉴 미디어 아트는 뉴 미디어 테크놀로지에 대한 이해를 기반으로 한 예술 분야이기 때문에, 기존의 인문학과 예술 분야 뿐만 아니라 과학과 공학 분야등 다양한 분야의 전문가들과의 협업을 통하여 작품을 만들 때, 더 큰 가치를 갖는 작품이 나올 수 있다고 생각한다. 인문과 예술, 공학이 융합해야만 새로운 형식의 예술 형식이 만들어질 수 있기 때문이다. 퍼포머티브는 기성 작가와 협업해서 작가의 창작환경, 즉 기술적 기반을 제공하기도 한다.

Every night through September 19, the show, which takes place until 10 PM, is free-of-charge for all. Watch images of children taking off on a winter adventure with a white bear or the splendor of Roman architecture, all made possible by the meeting of cutting edge technology and art.

[INTERVIEW : Song Rak-gyu, Operator,Light Wall] ”So there’s a 3D model of the museum in this virtual space on the computer screen. And I just have to take prefabricated video content and place it on the model.”

As the museum’s exterior becomes a canvas, on which fantastical images get projected on, viewers cannot seem to help gasping in awe.

서울시립미술관의 본관 외벽이 매일 밤 아름다운 영상작품을 즐길 수 있는 거대한 ‘캔버스’로 변한다.

서울시립미술관은 지난 1일부터 다음달 20일까지 미술관 본관 건물 외벽을 캔버스 삼아 예술적 영상을 보여주는 야외전시 ‘라이트 월(Light Wall)’전을 선보이고 있다.

이번 전시는 여름철 시민에게 수준 높은 볼거리를 제공하고 미술관이 시민에게 친밀한 문화적 향유 공간으로 다가가도록 하기 위해 마련됐다. 이에 따라 여름철 시민이 많이 방문하는 시간인 오후 8시부터 10시까지 온 가족이 즐길 수 있는 10분 내외의 영상작품 두 편을 반복적으로 보여준다.

‘라이트 월’전은 우리 일상의 삶을 특수한 영상물로 제작, 건물 외벽을 이용해 보여준다는 점이 흥미롭다. 첫 번째 영상은 눈이 내리는 겨울에 남매가 귀여운 백곰의 도움으로 세계여행을 하는 동화 같은 이야기다. 특히 영상 속에 펼쳐지는 서울의 풍경과 미술관의 소장품, 서울의 상징인 ‘해치’ 캐릭터가 볼거리다. 두 번째 영상은 현대 도시인의 모습을 돌아보게 하는 영상을 건물 외벽에 구현한다. 또 미술관 외벽을 빛을 이용해 그리스·로마시대의 건물 등과 같이 다양한 건물의 모습으로 변화시키기도 한다.

미술관 외벽이 동화 같은 이야기를 보여주는 캔버스로 변할 수 있었던 것은 ‘매핑(mapping) 기술’ 덕분이다. 매핑 기술은 건물의 외벽 디자인을 존중하면서 그 건물 외벽에 이야기를 구현하는 것이다. 예를 들어 미술관 외벽에 있는 실제 창문이 영상의 이야기 속에 필요 없다고 해서 인위적으로 사라지게 만드는 게 아니라 빛을 이용, 이야기에 어울리도록 창문을 꾸미는 식이다.

서울시립미술관 유희영 관장은 “여름밤 예술을 내부에서 감상하는 것에서 벗어나 외부 세계와 예술을 접목하는 방법을 고민했다”며 “최첨단 기술과 상상력을 이용해 미술관 앞마당을 시민이 모두 공유할 수 있는 마술 같은 세계를 구현했다”고 말한다.

Graphs, data, and indices in the stock market, the core and main symbol of capitalist economy, reflect not only stock price changes within specific industries, but also political, environmental, and international situations and changes. In other words, the stock market is a comprehensive report on the ever-changing global village, and a numerical manifestation of the evolution of human civilization. And so, a perfect prediction of stock market change is impossible. Numerical change in the stock market – flower of modern capitalism – is more a change in figures on an electric bulletin board: they reflect too many invisible things. An imaginary forest, for example, shown in Contingent Rule (type stocks v0.2), consists of an overview of trees, growing. This work, an imaginative painting, depicts changes in stock data.

Summer Night with Light Festival “2009 Light Wall”

Feast of colorful lights to embroider walls of the museum in midsummer nights! Fantastic fairy tale world and dynamic performance of images take place!

This exhibition is a new type of outdoor exhibition in which artistic images are projected onto exterior wall of the museum. It is inspired by overseas light festivals like Lyon Light Festival, Quebec Winter Carnival and Sapporo White Illumination. This exhibition will show a number of artworks from 8 to 10 p.m. in the evening. It is designed to the purpose that the museum would be recognized as the familiar cultural space by the citizens. The images to be displayed on the walls are composed of fantastic fairy tale images and other dynamic movements.
